Yoga in its essence is therapeutic, but most group classes are guided by teachers rather than trained therapists. Therapeutic yoga suggests a more consciously supportive approach, for example, trauma-informed teaching and or integration of other therapeutic skills. Yoga therapy, however, is a distinct professional discipline requiring extensive training and registration. It draws on Yogic and Ayurvedic principles to offer personalised practices that support an individual’s specific needs, much like how yoga was originally taught.
